View Full Version : Wheel sizes.....

First things first apologies for bringing this one up again, its getting as common as the airbag light.

I am currently running 235 40 18 on 8.5rim front
and 265 40 18 on 8.5rim rear

as you can imagine having the same size rim on the back as the front with these tyre sizes gives it a bit of a dragster wheel look to the back and I'm fed up of it, so new wheels are on the menu.
I want to keep the 235 front and the 265 rear aspect on 18s.
main objective is to get the rear tyre looking the same as the front in the sense of not bulging out like it does at the moment
(front tyre sits like a sports car and the rear looks like a stock family saloon car).
In my tyre spec above should I have 40 on the front and the back? (no idea about this bit, would changing it throw out the Speedo?)....

So help required please
i.e. 8s or 9s front?
rears 10s http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif???

I would go for 9" front and 10" rear. Has been used many times on the MKIV and works well.

Ok so what about the 40 bit thats the distance from the wheel to the road right?
If I went to a differance size say for example 35 would this mess the speedo?

That's the ratio of the width that ends up being the sidewall thickness. ie. a ratio of 40 on a 265 tyre would give you a sidewall thickness of about 106mm and a ratio of 35 would give a thickness of about 92.75mm

So as you can see the difference is not a lot but it can make your speedo error increase or decrease slightly. Off the top of my head i can't remember which size is the closest to stock wheels, but hopefully somebody will come back with that.

18 x 8.5 front and 18 x 9.5 rears

also according to the chappy at TLM If I choose to upgrade to UK brakes the wheel will clear them.
