i am going to replace my clutch for the first time and upgrade my j-spec brakes to the uk setup this month, so would like an idea of cost and recommendations before i splash the cash.
My Supra currently has 321bhp (just big exhaust still with both cats and air filter in engine mods) but next year likely to go up to 400ish mark so anyone recommend a clutch that'll work now and handle this future power increase for around ?400?
Those puny j-spec brakes have got to go, so to upgrade to uk's i'll need the bigger discs which i know will be ?150 but what pads have been found best just for fast road use?
Now what i don't know much about are the uk 4 pot calipers, can i get a second hand or re-conditioned pair or should i just buy a new set? Also any recommended suppliers? Have i have missed anything else with this uk brake conversion?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

On the clutch side i would seriously consider using a stock based clutch setup with your goals in mind. There are a few of these around from the various suppliers and they tend to consist of stock components just with an upgraded pressure plate. They tend to be good for upto around 500bhp/400lb/ft

Are you just going to upgrade the fronts to UK brakes at the moment?

If so you will need, calipers, discs, pads, and i would also recommend fitting braided hoses and a new fitting kit at the same time. Will also need some brake fluid, any good quality DOT5.1 will suffice. As for pads i would recommend something like Chris Wilson Fast Road pads, one of the TRD variants or Endless do a street pad which i think is the CC-X.

It's fine to buy UK calipers second hand as there is not a lot to go wrong with them and refurb kits are available for a reasonable price from Toyota. If i was in your shoes i'd just be looking out for a second hand set which are not too manky and with very little (if any) rust.

Thanks Martin for that info.

Yeah just the front brakes for now as i've only got a 2k budget for the summer/autumn and i will be replacing all 4 tyres in late July/August. I'm thinking of getting Goodyear Eagle F1s rather the Bridgestone SO 2/3s or is this a mistake? ( i don't drive in the wet like a nutter so i don't really need loads of wet weather grip is my reasoning!).
Regarding the brake stuff, i was thinking about getting the braided hoses so will definately now. Do i need to get a fitting kit as my jap specialist garage is gonna fit them?

Eagle F1s are pretty good in the wet.

Well whether you need a fitting kit depends on the condition of the ones that come with your calipers, if you are buying second hand. I would say that for the money you are investing then a fitting kit at this stage would be a very wise move. I'm not sure on the price but its got to be less than ?20

On the clutch side, CW (Chris Wilson) does/did offer the standard clutch but with uprated springs which might be worth considering?

Clutch wise, I'd recommend the RPS Street Sport. These cost ?460 inc VAT and delivery for MSOC members.

Martin's advice is very good as usual, my preference on the pads would be Endless SSS (Super Street) or VN-9500 (budget, but performance orientated) :)

I'd also advise 5.1 fluid (Motul) and stainless lines (Goodridge) when doing a brake upgrade, makes a very noticeable difference :)

Regards,

Gaz.

Brilliant, just happened to order that RPS clutch a while ago (7th June).

If anyone wants to know the front 4 pot calipers from Toyota were ?225.

I'm also getting the RPS flywheel as well but does anyone know what the weight of the Supra's standard flywheel on a TT is?

I,m doing some research on the disc,s and pads

Toyota disc and pads will probably be the way to go for road use

I,ve been looking at getting some flashy grooved disc,s but all in I,m not impressed with the price as none seem any better than the toyota ones

Unless a trader can persuade me that paying double what toyota are asking for a disc is really worth it.

Well this is interesting, as I have not longed phoned a trader regarding my OEM discs that keep warping and they have advised me to go for a grooved disc, which I have just spend ?230 odd quid on, so Im hoping there is a good argument against this, otherwise time well tell Rob....... ;)

i also recently warped my disks(trackday) and have replaced with 3g grooved ones-making abit of a squeek but at least im stopping better, maybe going on the track this weekend if so i'll report on wether these ones stand up to the abuse(hope so for 300ish quid)

Mate only 2 sets, I think I can be quite aggressive under breaking. I remember last summer, racing a bike, roundabout then dual carriageway then roundabout again and I was determined to stay hanging off the back of his bike, but by the forth roundabout breaking from over a ton, my breaks started to fade, to the point I didnt think I was gonna stop for the next roundabout in time, did just, and then the smell.........at the end of the day people say road use or track use but you can treat a bit of road like a track and if you do then your gonna notice things when their not up to the job....

I asked the trader about squeaking noise and they assured me they dont tend to make a noise as after having a lightened flywheel I dont want anymore odd noises.

Have you got the uk brakes on your car ?

I get up to similar antics with my car (ask the wife/seat gripper :D ) and have never had brake fade
