Duff starter motor

Hey Guys,

Was driving to work the other day and car started tripping out on me cutting in and out and then the it sounded like the starter motor stuck on, pulled over and smoke coming from starter motor area and car would not start.

Everytime i tried to start it the power would reset and the alarm would go barmy.

I pulled the starter motor relay and then tried to start as a test and the alarm didn`t have a fit so I am assuming the starter motor is buggered and pulling to ground causing a short.

How much does a new starter motor cost and how easy are they to fit?

If anyone else has any other ideas on what could be causing this then please let me know, open to options at the moment as I am currently driving round in a renauly laguna.

I think they are quite expensive from Toyota, Martin has a spare one though. PM him if you are interested.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info, I spoke with toyota and here is what they qouted :-

28100-46140-84 1.4kw 213 incl vat & exchange
28100-46150-84 1.2kw 204 incl vat & exchange

The toyota guy recommended the 1.4kw for UK use, does this sound correct?

I checked these part numbers when i listed my starter motor on Ebay and i could only find one listed for the MKIV. Can double check tonight.

Just checked and the 1.2 KW one is actually listed on J-spec cars along with the 1.4KW one. The 1.4KW one is the only one listed for UK spec cars. Guess i know which one i'd want http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I had problems with the starterd on my 94 N/A. The parts were actually around ?6 to replece, cost me more as I paid the guy to take off the starter etc.....

Take it of and take to a reputable auto electrician
