View Full Version : Are budget single kits really worth it ?

I've noticed for a while now that some companies seem to be coming up with budget single turbo kits which make use of the stock exhaust manifold.

Are these really such a good idea or a false economy ? Or is it just a current 'phase' that so many people want to go to a single turbo, that they'd rather go single than think about the overal solution and hence these companies are just supplying to the demand.

We all know how restrictive the exhaust manifold can be at high hp levels and it seems that to make use of it to try and drive a single is going to be quite challenging. I have no doubt the turbo's people are talking about can make some good numbers between 500 & 600BHP, but how well do they spool ?

Using the stock manifold that is designed to spool two small turbos to now try and spool a bigger turbo just doesn't seem too logical to me and hence possibly false economy.

To try and put it in practical terms i could quite well imagine a stock twin BPU car getting the jump on one of these budget single cars until they have spooled, which in turn would make the day to day driving of a budget single solution........interesting.

Anybody have experience of these budget single kits? (i'm talking manifold adapter type here, not the kits that come with a complete replacement manifold)

I think it's a good idea.
1.) Less to go wrong.
2.) I don't usually care about the response from 1-2.5k rpm. So I'm happy enough with losing the sequential system.
3.) These budget singles are not specced to out flow what the manifold can deal with and because they are relatively small singles (T57 to 61) they spool up faster than you can get a normal car onto it's second turbo.
4.) They run an external wastegate which lets face it sounds amazing. http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
5.) It takes the same additional kit and money to get one of these running as it does to get Hybrids running and you get to remove the weight of the stock sequential system.

I agree with Alex on this one.

I have a single kit which is based on a cast manifold and my PHR stage 1 turbo seems to spool very nicely.

The one shown above doesn't, although from them pics its hard to see the actuator.

I guess this is the question i'm asking, in that do they spool as well as the BPU twins can. From Wez's reply seems they do.

Wez, do you have a torque plot from a dyno for your setup ? I'd love to see how it compares to the stock system (think i have a stock graph somewhere).

When my motor is finished i would be more than happy to chuck it on a dyno but i still have some work to do which included fitting my 680cc injectors etc http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
