After reading that a manual box costs ?3k+ and theres no way of servicing\re-building it.. just how reliable and bullet proof are these things??

How about the clutch aswell, is it fairly sturdy?

Have my heart set on a manual when the bank balance finally builds up, just the EEK factor of a gearbox failure... http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/help.gif

Manual gearboxes can be rebuild, parts are available.

Chances of one breaking in normal use is very small

Clutch is pretty sturdy and should last 60k+ assuming your don't do to many racing starts/ launches at Santa Pod

As a general rule Supras are very reliable cars however they did cost ?40k from new and the repair cost have not tumbled inline with the secondhand values http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

If you got that snippet from my Auto vs Manual article i apologise as that article was written before service parts became available for the V160.

As Gavin states, the boxes are damn strong and rarely give bother. Just make sure you use the correct fluid in them, Toyota V160 to be entirely safe.
